Enabling right click on sites that disable it

Lots of web sites have disabled the right click function of the mouse button... it's really, really annoying. This is done so that you don't steal (via right-click->save picture) their photos or images or any other goodies. Unfortunately, it disables ALL right-click functionality: copy, paste, open in new window.

It's easy to change, assuming your using IE 6:
Click "Tools"->"Internet Options"
Click the "Security" tab
Click "Custom Level"
Scroll down to the "Scripting" section
Set "Active Scripting" to "disable"
Click "Ok" a couple of times.

You'll probably want to turn this back to "enable" when your done... 'cause generally the javascript enhances a website.

The Matrix: Path of Neo

THE MATRIX: PATH OF NEO will follow the story of the blockbuster motion picture trilogy THE MATRIX, THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS and for the first time allow gamers to play as Neo and become "the One".
Gamers will play as Neo, but from the moment the game begins, how the situations play out, how they handle them, how they deal with the events, where they go, how people react to them -- it's all up to the gamer. They may win where Neo failed or find another way to solve the problem -- the path is now theirs to follow.
As Neo, the choices the player makes to resolve each scenario and the resulting consequences may have a different result than the original films. Alternative scenarios filled with new characters, content and storylines have all been written and planned by the Wachowski Brothers to expand the Matrix universe and overall gaming experience.
Gamers will assume the role of Neo from when, as Thomas Anderson, he gets the cell phone in the package from Morpheus, to the flying street battle in the rain against Agent Smith.

BitTorrent is a P2P system that makes transfering large files (or groups of files) amongst a large group of people easy, fast and efficient. The BitTorrent network is set up in a way that is a little different than a normal P2P network. With this network, you really don't do any searching for files that the other users have using the client as you would with traditional clients like Kazaa. Rather, you go to websites that have lists of recently released files.

BitTorrent

The websites listing the torrents are called indexing sites and have become very popular. Their popularity has come at a cost however, with the MPAA and law enforcement agencies shutting them down. There are no shortage of sites to go to so long as you know which are currently being used, as they come and go so quickly these days. The files that you get all come as a package called an archive, and to receive them you must first get a .torrent file (don't worry, that's what you went to these websites for). Once you have downloaded the .torrent file, your BitTorrent client will kick in and connect to a managing computer that then connects you to others who have the files.

BitTorrent is a P2P system that uses a central location to manage users' downloads. The central location is a tracker that is connected to when you download and launch a .torrent file. The tracker keeps track of all the people who have the file (both partially and completely) and connects users to each other for downloading and uploading.

The BitTorrent network is impressive mostly for the speed and reliability with which you get files that have been recently released. As long as a .torrent file has enough people sharing then you can be assured that it will start quickly and maintain a good download speed. This is what makes browsing through recently released .torrents so much fun. Whatever catches your eye can be yours in no time. Most indexing sites have a system of listing the number of Seeders and Leechers for a particular archive:

What is a seeder?
A seed(er) is a client on the BT network that has a complete copy of a particular archive. For any archive to work, there must be at least one seed to download from originally. Sometimes under certain circumstances, there may be no one seeder but enough people with all the parts to make up the whole archive, this is called a distributed copy. It is HIGHLY recommended that once you have gotten an archive you leave the BT client running for at least the amount of time that it took you to download the archive to help ensure that others will also be able to get it. Share and Share alike!

What is a leecher?
A leech(er) is a client on the BT network that does not have a complete copy of a particular archive yet. When any new client begins downloading an archive, they are a leecher until they have finished downloading the entire archive and then become a seeder. The name 'leecher' here is an unfortunate use that has become too commonly used even though it is really not applicable to what the meaning is. A leecher normally means someone who downloads without uploading (takes but does not give.) But here, a leecher is part of the network and is uploading as well, many times more KB than they download. But hey, it's worth the new meaning once you appreciate the vast resources that BT brings to you.

What is a .torrent file?
To download something with BitTorrent, you must have a .torrent file. This file contains in it a location that tells the BitTorrent client where to go to find the tracker that manages the uploading and downloading of the archive. An archive is a complete set for downloading which may include one file or many files. The one .torrent file contains the archive information also. To download on this network it is simply a matter of clicking on the .torrent file in your web browser, then the BitTorrent client kicks in and asks where you'd like to save the archive. That's it, from there you just sit back and watch the client work it's magic.

You may have heard about overclocking recently as it has become a fairly popular practice. In part this due to the great overclocking success of the C300a over two years ago. Overclocking is achieved by running your CPU higher than it's specified clock speed. This is done by modifying the CPU multiplier and/or the system I/O bus (i.e., Front Side Bus) clock speeds. Since Intel has been locking the multiplier settings, the way we overclock is to change the FSB clock speed. In my case, I'm overclocking a Pentium III 500E MHz FC-PGA Coppermine to 750MHz . The 500E has a locked multiplier of 5. The CPU speed is determined by multiplying the FSB setting by the multiplier. In this case, we have a multiplier of 5 and an FSB of 150MHz to achieve 750MHz. Normally, the 500E runs at a 100MHz (5 x 100) bus speed.

Unfortunately, not all chips overclock and some chips are better for overclocking than others. Fortunately, there are number of strategies available to the overclocker that can help to alleviate the problems that pop up. These strategies include, adjustable FSB settings, cooling, and voltage adjustments.

If you're not afraid to push your system and get your hands dirty putting it together then I highly recommend trying it. However, keep in mind that overclocking can cause damage to your system and could result in potential loss of data on your hard disk.

What Makes a Good Overclocking Chip?

The success of the Celerons created a great market for overclockers and for the most part it can be easy. There are several important factors that will determine success, of course the CPU itselfI chose the ABIT BE6 motherboard because it allows you to set the external clock speed, AGP clock, and voltage from the BIOS. This makes playing around with settings very convenient.

The Celerons were excellent overclocking chips for two main reasons, an on-die L2 cache running at core speed, and a FSB speed of 66MHz. The on-die L2 cache was critical since this allowed many Celerons to reach bus speeds of 100MHz without failing. Many chips such as the PII or K6 don't have an on-die L2 cache and have less success handling the increases in bus speeds. Another critical factor was the Celeron's default bus speed of 66MHz. Since the Intel 440BX chipset supports bus speeds of 66 and 100MHz this gives the Celeron a lot of room to play. Another added value is that a 100MHz bus speed is supported by the system and will not overclock the PCI, AGP buses or memory subsystems. A little more on this later.

Some of the key factors that lead to successful overclocking include the following:

FSB Settings
PCI/AGP Multipliers
CPU Multiplier
Core Voltage
Memory
Case Cooling
CPU Cooling
Let's take a brief look at each of these factors. You'll want a motherboard that allows you to set change the CPU clock frequency or FSB settings, PCI and AGP multipliers, CPU Core Voltage, CPU L2 Cache Latency, and SDRAM settings.

FSB - The more settings that the motherboard allows the better your chances. The ABIT BE6 II has a wide number of FSB settings - 66, 75, 83-200(1MHz increments) that give the board extreme flexibility. You'll want this to get the most out of your CPU. Since your chip might not be stable at specific FSB you can back down from to find an FSB that is stable.

PCI - Ideally you want your PCI devices to be unaffected by your changes to the FSB speed. Unfortunately, there will be some effect on your PCI bus speed but in most cases it is minimal. Normally, the PCI bus operates at 33MHz. You'll want to stay as close as possible to this speed. The ABIT BE6 II motherboard supports PCI bus multipliers of 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2. For example, a FSB setting of 66 is multiplied by 1/2 to achieve 33MHz, 100FSB is multiplied by 1/3. This allows the overclocker to keep a PCI bus speed that is close to the original spec.

AGP - Similar to the PCI bus you will want a motherboard that provides a multiplier setting for the AGP bus so that your video card will run at the specified bus speed of 66MHz. The ABIT BE6 II provides AGP 1/1 and 2/3 mutipliers. At 100MHz the AGP bus is multiplied by 2/3 to yield 66MHz. Of course if you're running at an FSB of say 83MHz your AGP bus will be slightly out of spec when multiplied by 2/3 (55MHz).

CPU Multiplier - As mentioned above your CPU is a locked number that can't be changed. For example the 300A had a 4.5 multiplier. One of the reasons why the Celeron 300A was such a great overclocking chip is that the 4.5 multiplier when multiplied against 100MHz yielded 450MHz! A 50% increase - not bad! You'll need to know the multiplier for your chip so keep this in mind when you're setting a target for your overclocking. It is a very important factor in the chips overclockability.

Core Voltage - Although most chips will overclock to some degree it is sometimes necessary to increase the core voltage being supplied to the CPU in order to stabilize the chip. The trade off here is that increasing the voltage often leads to more heat which in turn can cause the chip to be unstable and even shorten its lifespan. The Celerons had a default voltage of 2.0v. The new FC-PGA Coppermine chips come with a 1.6v core. Ideally, you want your chip to run stable at the default voltage, but it is often necessary to raise the voltage up to 20% higher in order to stabalize the chip. Adjusting the voltage is one most important variables in sucessful overclocking. Be aware that too much voltage can permanently damage the chip which is why we limit the voltage increase to 20% outside of spec.

CPU Cooling - The single most important factor to a stable overclocked CPU is cooling. Too much leads to system instability and a shorter CPU lifespan. The simple rule is - the cooler the better. Due to the popularity of overclocking there are now several commercially supported products that provide a variety of cooling methods. The current cooling techniques range from heatsinks, water coolers, and Peltier coolers. The most common method is to using a efficient heatsink and fan combination. In the case of the Intel Coppermine CPU the retail heatsink is great for normal operating temps but a larger heatsink is required when undertaking more extreme overclocking. The heatsink should be used in combination with thermal compound in order to ensure that there is good contact between the surface of the heatsink and CPU die. A very thin layer of thermal compound should be applied to the surface of the CPU (not the ceramic potion but the heatsink slug itself). Thermal compound is usually made of Zinc Oxide which has a low thermal resistance and is electrically non-conducting.

CASE Cooling - In order to make sure that your CPU is getting lots of cool air it is important to take a close look at your case. Your case should have a power supply that is located at the top of the case. The power is a source of heat and since heat rises the top is a good place for it. The power supply fan should be blowing air out of the case. This will help to remove the hot air from the top of the case. Next, your case should have another fan located at the bottom of the case that blows are into the case. This brings cool air into the case. Last, many cases come with a third vent located behind the CPU. This is a good spot to a fan in that blows air into the case and directly onto the CPU. This combination works pretty well. We here at Crazy PC have added a 4th fan to overclocked system. It is located at the top of our case and vents air directly out the top. This was done using one of the Radio Shack (Nidec) squirrel cage fans and cutting a small rectangular opening in the top of the case. With this setup we are consistently running at less than 10F above ambient room temp.

Overclocking Beyond 133MHz

As mentioned above when overclocking you want to avoid taking the AGP and PCI buses out of spec, but unfortunately this is not always avoidable. While the new FC-PGA chips are extremely overclockable they start a default bus speed of 100MHz. This means we can't acheive the big jumps in clock speeds without overclocking the AGP and PCI buses as well as system memory. The three things too look at are the AGP video card, PCI devices, and RAM.

AGP Video Card - As mentioned above the BX chipsets provide1/1 and 2/3 multipliers for the AGP bus. Our current system is an overclocked 550E running at 150MHz. The 150MHz will set the AGP bus to 100MHz - or 51% out of spec (66MHz). Well, this doesn't appear to be a problem for most NVIDIA GeForce cards. Our trust Leadtek GeForce 256 DDR is completely stable at 100MHz AGP! But, a lot of graphics cards will not be stable at that speed. You can test your video card by setting the AGP multiplier to 1/1 and at an FSB speed of 100MHz. This is a technique that can be used to determine if your video card is stable at the higher speeds.

RAM - You will need RAM that runs stable at your target FSB. For example if you are running a 100MHz FSB you need at least PC100 SDRAM. If you're shooting anything above 100MHz then PC133MHz will be the next choice. If your target speed is above 133MHz then you should look for RAM that is high quality and can potentially handle the higher speeds. We're running at 150MHz with two brands of memory here at Crazy PC. We like the PC133 Corsair memory and the EMS HSDRAM.. Both are stable at 150MHz - your mileage may vary.

Trouble Shooting

The basic technique to trouble shoot is the process of elimination. I like to start from the most common source of problems down to the least common. So here is a rough approach to take to isolate the cause of instability.

Since CPU overheating is very often the cause of stability problems. Try first to run with your case cover off and position a house fan to blow into cool are directly into the case. Many times this will be enough to pin-point heat as an issue.
If you still suspect that cooling is an issue try a better heatsink. In our case, we're using the GlobalWin FKP-32 heatsink which provides excellent cooling at higher temps.
If you've exhausted the cooling options try increasing the voltage to your CPU. As mentioned above we don't recommend going beyond 20% out of spec. Our system here at Crazy PC is running a PIII 500E @ 750MHz, 1.7volts (1.6v default).
If the system still isn't stable take a look at your PCI and AGP bus speeds. Are they out of spec? If so, then consider swapping out one component at a time or remove it from the system completely. We recommend temporarily removing any components that aren't critical in order to further isolate the cause of the problem and reduce the number of potential problems. Then try swapping out each component to see if one in particular is causing the problem. We were able to determine that our Matrox video card was the cause of instability at the higher bus speeds by using this approach and once we switched to the GeForce card are system ran stable.
Make sure your RAM is capable of running at the target bus speed. If you've tried everything else but are still getting application drop outs, or lock ups your RAM could be the problem. Try swapping out the RAM. If your have more than one stick of RAM in your system try only one at a time. Also, make sure your RAM is all the spec.
Lastly, make sure you have a good quality power supply.

Overclocking Tips

If you're not willing to take the risk of overclocking - DON'T.
Always use a grounding strap and attach it to your case. Don't take unnecessary risks. Especially when you're about to take a huge one!
Cool your CPU. Attach a fan with a big heatsink to it. Some people recommend a dual fan. I have only one with a big heatsink. - I've purchased a Radio Shack temperature sensor (Cat No. 277-123) that I will use to monitor my CPU temp. I hope to have more info on the site soon (including pics).
If you're heat sink is bare metal on the side that abuts the CPU you should apply thermal compound (or heatsink grease). Apply a thin layer to CPU die surface and surface of heatsink that will make contact with the CPU. The layer should be thin and not dripping. Thermal compound will help conduct the heat from the CPU to the heatsink better by filling in the tiny gaps between the chip and the heatsink. Apply a thin layer to the CPU die surface that contacts the heatsink surface. It's non-conducting but be careful not to be sloppy anyway. OK? You an buy heatsink compound from Radio Shack.
On tower cases make sure the air blows in from the bottom and out from the top. Cool air in the bottom, hot air out the top. The power supply fan should blow out. I installed an extra fan next to the power supply that sucks air out. My ambient temp is between 80F-86F. Some say your temp should be no more than 10F-20F more than room temp.
When you start overclocking start with default voltage and work your way up by small increments (.05). Remember cooling becomes more critical as you up your voltage as well.
I've read that some drives have problems with the non-standard bus speeds and UDMA which can lead to corrupted data. As a precaution, I recommend disabling DMA.
Some people recommend a burn-in period before overclocking. Make sure you have your system running stable for a period of time. The term "burn-in" is also used by some to mean running the CPU at a specific clock speed and voltage. Some believe the CPU adapts to the higher voltage after time and the voltage can then be lowered.
Get PC100 8ns CAS2 or better SDRAM. Preferably a brand name not no-name. The quality of your RAM becomes more critical with higher clock speeds.

This is a basic guide, to which i hope others will contribute. I should be able to compile several resources that may be helpful as you build your PC.

Keep in mind, i am not an expert, and of course, my computers will probably begin to fry one by one as soon as i finish this guide, so i hope it was worth it. Here goes:

PART I: Parts you will need

So, you've decided to build your own computer? good. Now comes the fun, and probably longest phase of building it: picking out the parts!

Becuase things constantly change, i wont go into too much compatibility detail here, but this is the single most important part of buying the right stuff, so maybe somebody else will help out with that.

these are just some common compatibility issues, there are plenty more, so do your research.
*Enough power, make sure PSU is powerful enough and High quality.
*SATA hard drives require a motherboard that supports SATA
*The socket type of the processor MUST match the socket type of the motherboard.
*The motherboard will only support AGP or PCIe x16, one or the other, your video card must match.
*RAM must match the type supported by the motherboard, it will say which is supported, DDR2 WILL not fit on a DDR motherboard.

Basic "needed parts" list:

getting all of the parts is also critical, so here is the stuff you will need:

Motherboard
The motherboard is the large circuit board that holds the processor, the system memory, the chipset, and other goodies that your computer will need to run. when you buy your motherboard, make sure it has the appropriate graphics card interface (or just buy the right video card.) there are two common types of graphic card ports, AGP and PCIe, your motherboard will be one or the other, and so will the video card. make sure that they are both the same, or they WILL NOT fit together.

RAM (system memory)
you will need RAM for your system to operate. at the writing of this guide, most gamers suggest getting 1 gigabyte of RAM (1024 Megabytes), but many current gaming rigs have 512 MB (sometimes less). when buying ram, it is usually better (at the time of this writing) to get 2x 1/2 of what you want: for example, if you want a gig of ram, it will run faster if you get 2 sticks of 512 rather than one stick of 1024. buying ram can be complicated, decipher which ram is supported by your motherboard (it will say), and which ram is best for your processor (buying ram that is faster than needed can be a waste of money.)

Power Supply Unit (PSU)
The PSU delivers power to all of your components. this is the piece of the computer that plugs directly into the wall.(well, surge protector or UPS, if you are smart.)

Processor (CPU)
Dont build a comp without it!
You generally have 2 options here:
1. buy a CPU that is a "retail" version. this usually means it comes with a CPU cooler (you need one) and a longer warranty.
2. buy a CPU marked "OEM." this usually means that you will need to buy a CPU cooler, and the warranty period will be shorter.
some compatibility information for mobo/cpus
The type of processor you buy will determine the type of motherboard that you need, or vice-versa. There are currently, at the time of this writing, several socket types to choose from. both the processors and motherboards will plainly state which socket type it is, and no other types of processors will be compatible with it. here are some examples of socket types:

INtel: Skt 478, Skt LGA 775.
AMD: Skt A, Skt 754, Skt 939.

make sure your motherboard and processor are compatible. also, even if the socket type matches, there may be other compatibility issues. best bet is to look for a motherboard that specifically says (at the manufacturer's website) that it supports the processor you want to use. short of this, there are a couple of numbers you can look at to make sure it is compatible: FSB and SKT type. if the Motherboard supports the FSB speed that your processor says it has, it will say. make sure that it does. The skt type will indicate if the processor will 'fit' on the motherboard, the FSB will indicate if it will run fast enough.

CPU cooler
CPUs generate a lot of heat, without a cooler, they will burn up very quickly. CPU coolers will generally include the 'stuff' you will need to install it: It will generally consist of a heatsink (big metal thing), a fan (some can be fanless), thermal conducting material (paste or a pad, paste is recommended).

Video Card
got to have it! you cant see what your computer is doing if you dont have one of these. some motherboards come with integrated graphics. these are fine for most home-use applications, but even teh best integrated cards aren't very good for games. at the time of this writing, do not consider a video card with less than 128MB of RAM if you are going to be gaming. (see the video card guide tutorial, a stickie by Lotos.)

Hard Drive (HD)
The harddrive stores information such as operating system files and games. you can generally use as much as 2/3 of the overall space of the HD (without performance loss), so try to shop accordingly. You will need a hard drive that has the appropriate interface. your motherboard will say which interfaces it has that you can use. the two most common types of interfaces for home computers are:

*SATA 150
*IDE (IDE is used for IDE, ATA, and UATA, but the motherboard will specify if it has ATA or UATA support)

40GB is about as small as you should go for gaming, but that's streching it a little thin if this will be your only storage space.

Optical Drive
Nowadays, these come in many different configurations, buy according to your needs, but you at least need one that has CDROM functioinality, and it is advisable to also have DVDROM functionality as some games will begin shipping on DVDs.

Cables
Yes, you will need a way to connect the various components to the motherboard, this is done with, thats right, cables. a cable is referred to usually by the the type of interface it uses. for example:
Hard drive cables can be SATA or IDE b/c a hard drive will use one or the other.
CD drive cables use an IDE interface, so they are usually simply called IDE device cables.

*most* motherboard manufacturers include the cables that you will need. specialty cables that match your color scheme and/or are rounded for style are available for cheap.

Other Misc. Stuff you may already have:
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers

OK, so what is that so far, in short?

motherboard
RAM
PSU
CPU
Cooler
HD
CD drive
Cables
Misc. Stuff

Now, while all of those things together should give you a working computer, there are some other parts that many people (myself included) would highly recommend.

CASE (chassis)Note: HIGHLY recommended!
you don't want your computer spilling out all over the floor or your desk do you? NO? well, consider getting a case. I have found that small wooden shelves (dont conduct electricity) work well if you want to build a comp w/o a case, but its not recommended to leave it out of the case b/c of dust and other FOD (foreign object damage) possibilities (Beer).

Sound Card
Most motherboards come with onboard sound which is fine for most people. A sound card will usually give better sound and more features.

Extra Cooling
this normally comes in the form of extra case fans. one could write an entire guide on fans alone, so i can't go into this much, but it should suffice to say, if you put your computer in a case, you will usually want at least one extra fan to keep air moving through the case.

3.5" drive: (floppy) remember these?
these can become very useful, even if you dont want to leave it installed all of the time, it is a good idea to have one. If you purchase a harddrive with an SATA interface, the 3.5" drive may be needed to install the SATA drivers for windows if you only use one SATA drive. (using 2 will avoid this problem, usually.)

Media card reader
these are becoming more popular. they allow you to insert any one of many types of flash media cards that are used in PDAs, Cameras, and other digital devices. (much faster than using the device to read/write onto the card.)

Uninterrupted Power Supply(ier)This will give your computer a stream of power if the power goes out at your house. even cheap ones will give the computer enough power to shut down properly. the better ones will let you game for hours if your power goes out. Some powersupplies may have the UPS built in, or, it may be a separate unit.

Extra USB ports
many cases come with fron USB ports. if you are buying one that doesnt, you can always use the ones that are on the motherboard (which will be on the back of the case.) if you want easy access, consider a fron USB panel. many media readers have a single USB port on them as well.

PART II: Putting it all together

Once you have all of your parts sitting in front of you, you will naturally want to build it now. dont forget to go to all of the websites that you bought the parts from and begin reviewing the packaging of the parts.

note: i have this ordered in "steps." this is the order that i find easy, but, there is not a particular "correct order" that you must use.

Step 1. Inventory and precautions
this is simple, make sure you have all of the necessary parts before you start building.

when building the computer, it is important to be cautious of static electricity. there are static-preventing wrist bands that you can buy, but most people just recommend touching grounded bare metal before handling any components.

handle all of your components with care. they are all very fragile and sensitive, treat them as such.

Step 2. Installing the CPU:

I wanted to take a quote from a post that T Rush recently made, as to why and how you may want to install the CPU onto the motherboard before you put the motherboard into the case.
So here's what he has to say about that:
"I feel it is far easier and better to put the RAM, CPU and heatsink/fan on when you can get to and see the the slots, sockets and clamps/catches. with some heatsinks like the ZALMANs you need the motherboard out of the case to replace the 'back plate' with the one that comes with the heatsink....other heatsinks like the XP-120 not only needs to have a new mount attached to the stock back plate (which may come off the back of the motherboard when you remove the stock mount)...but the XP-120 also uses 4 spring clips which are very hard to reach from any angle but the side, as they are under the fins.

I really like to be able to see what I'm doing when seating a CPU in its socket and applying thermal paste... with the board outside of the case you have much better lighting....I also do the thermal paste twice...after putting on the heatsink...I take it back off, and look at the mark left on the CPU and heatsink by the paste...this will tell me if I used too much or too little...and if the heatsink is make'n good contact and is setting level and flat.....then I clean off the paste and do it all over again."

Like he says, if you are going to install any parts onto the motherboard, keep something protective under it, like the pad that comes in the bottom of the motherboard box.

The intallation procedure on recent motherboards has become fairly simple. The manual that came with your motherboard will probably have a fairly good outline of the process.

The basic procedure is something like this, and barely varies with newer processors:

1. "open" the socket.
2. set (do not force) the CPU carefully into the socket using the correct orientation, and touching only the sides of the unit.
3. "close" the socket, locking the CPU into place.

Step 3. Installing CPU cooler:

those guides linked to above will also show you how to install the cooler. a few things to keep in mind:

*thermal paste is generally recommended over the thermal pad, although (for AMD, at least) the manufacturers support the use of the thermal pad. (make sure to use a thin layer)

*try to keep the cooler flat as you install it.

*remove the cooler after you have installed it and examine the paste to make sure that it has been applied correctly.

*the use of an aftermarket cooler may provide several advantages over the stock cooler in terms of quietness of operation or overall cooling performance, or both.

so after all that is said, here is the basic process for installing the cooler:

1. apply a thin layer of thermal paste to the Heatspreader of the processor, or to the top of the chip (have a look at those guides)

2. set the heatsink down FLATLY onto the processor and clip it on.

3. remove the heatsink to examine how well your grease application has worked, make sure that it is uniform and thin.

4. clean the thermal grease off of both (coffee filter and isoprophyl alcohol will work, although, many people recommend using a more pure form of alcohol, available from electronics stores that is made for cleaning electronic parts.

Here is a tip from Taimaster regarding the removal of thermal grease:
"...Brake cleaner (only used spray type) from your local Auto parts dealer and Q-Tip cotten swab is the best way to clean the Thermal grease off anything and it doesnt leave a residue.
Spray a little on a Q-Tip by putting the cotten swab right on the spray nozzles hole so as to contain any over spray.
Wipe the area to be cleaned with the swab, the cleaner desolves the grease and the Q-Tip soaks it up.
I spin the Q-Tip between my finger and thumb as i wipe, it helps prevent smearing as the grease loads the Q-Tip." thanks to Taimaster.

5. Re-apply the paste and re-seat the heatsink/fan assembly

6. ALWAYS, always, always, make sure to plug the fan into the motherboard. the fan connector will usually be marked "CPU."

*note: your motherboard manual probably has the procedure outlined in good detail, if you have it. if you are installing an aftermarket cooler, they will usually come with detailed instructions.

if your aftermarket cooler calls for a backing plate, DO NOT ignore this part of the directions! not using the correct backing plate will at best make you computer less mobile, and at worst completly f-up the mobo.

Step 4. installing the RAM

The ram goes into slots that have clips on either side of them that will latch onto the ram.
Make sure to check your motherboard instruction manual to make sure you are using the right slots.

Push the ram down into the slots until the clips 'click' into place. This requires a bit of pressure, so dont be afraid, but at the same time, dont force them in if it seems like they aren't going down with a good amount of pressure.

The ram is made to be easily installed and removed becuase this is one of the most common upgrades that people make to their computers. follow the motherboard instruction manual, and you will have no problems.

the ram is made to be installed in a particular direction. look at the interface, you will see a notch that is offset, you will see a corresponding piece in the slot. make sure they match up.

Step 5. Install the PSU

The PSU screws into the back of the case, usually at the top. you will see the holes on the back of the case. it may be easier to install the motherboard first, before the PSU, becuase you dont have the wires to deal with. If you do this, however, you will run the risk of dropping the rather heavy PSU onto the motherboard, the CPU, or the CPU cooler, damaging it, so be careful.

Step 6: installing the Motherboard into the case:

The motherboard screws down into the case. well, actually it usually screws down onto spacers that are installed in the case. Most times you have to screw these spacers in yourself, MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS! (your motherboard will short out and possibly be ruined if you screw it directly down onto the metal back of the case!)

The motherboard has two special power connectors for it. a 20 or 24 pin connector and a 4 pin connector. there is only one place for each of these to go, and it will be easy to spot them. be sure to install them both.

Step 7: installing the Drives

You will see where your case manufacturer intended for you to install your drives. If they are meant to be screwed in, i recommend screwing down both sides of the drive, which means taking off the other side of the case. when you first set it up, for ease of removal and reconfiguration, you may not want to do this; once your comp is set up the way you like, however, it is a good idea.

the drives will slide into the drive rails and you will need to remove the plastic covers from the front of your case for the CD drive so that it will be able to open and close.

For your hard drive, i keep reading that you shouldnt install them upside down. OK, dont install it upside down then, install it with the label side facing the ceiling, not the circuit side.

For each drive that you install:

1. Install the drive into the case
2. hook up the appropriate cable to the drive
3. hook up the cable to the appropriate interface on the motherboard (more to come on this)
4. be sure to hook up the appropriate power cable from teh power supply. The CD drive and the Hard drive will require their own power source, so make sure you give it to them. they usually accept a female four pin power connector from the PSU which is called a "molex" connector.

Special SATA procedure
If you have an SATA hard drive, are installing windows, and are planning on using a single SATA drive as the primary hard drive onto which you will install windows, there is a special procedure you must use that involves using a 3.5" disk to install the SATA drivers. i can't go into this right now, but maybe i can get some help on this. otherwise, just be aware of the issue, and do some google searchin'.

Step 8. installing the Video card

And now, the video card! yippie! this is what the entire computer was built to run, right? this may not be the "heart" of the computer, but it sure is important, if you had to compare it to a body part (or parts) and its not the heart, then its probably, the.....um, well, you know.

place the video card into the correct slot and push down, done. installing video cards is actually quite easy (another common upgrade). Your motherboard manual will tell you which slot to use if you are confused.

If you are using a single AGP 8x or PCIe 16x card on a motherboard that is made for single cards, there will only be one slot that the card will fit into. (none, if you bought the wrong motherboard.)

If you are using a single card on a motherboard that is made for dual cards (sli, crossfire), refer to the motherboard manual, which will be quite specific on this subject.

don't worry about video card drivers and such for now, we'll get to that after you install windows.

Many newer cards are made to use an external power source. this means that you will need to hook it up directly to your PSU. If you have this kind of card, you should be able to see where it is meant to accept (most commonly) a molex connector on the back of the card. be sure to plug this in or you will get some scary (though usually not harmful) results.

Step 9. cooling

installing fans is easy, and each set-up is different. you can plug your fans directly into the motherboard, or attach them to the PSU directly. there are many ways to configure your cooling, but just pay attention and make sure you have enough.

this should now bring you to part III, power-up.

remember that IDE drives (CD/DVD and Hard Drives) use jumpers that may need to be set on the drives themselves so that they match their placement on the IDE ribbon(master or slave)
the BIOS still may be able to 'see' these drives if the jumpers are set wrong, but they may not work properly

get all your hardware up and running/detected before you try and install Windows ( a RAID array will need to be 'built' use'n the RAID controllers BIOS before you can use it)

also ...you will need a CD with Windows XP to have SP1 or higher if you are use'n a hard drive larger than 137GB

All Retail SwishSites [COMBO FLASH PACK)

All the Retail SwishSites 1 - 32 (except number 10, which I seem to have lost somewhere!)

Normally each SwishSite has its own installer, that defaults to your 'my docs' folder, and then wants to open an info file and a help page. Installing 32 Swishsites can therefore take some time, so I have rar'd the output. This will save you much time and effort. Simply unrar and then copy the folders to wherever you keep your templates / resources.

A total of 168MB, spilt into 3 parts:

SwishSites 1 - 9 ~ [19.2MB]
SwishSites 11 - 20 ~ [24.2MB]
SwishSites 21 - 32 ~ [37.4MB]

When you unrar, each site will be created in its own folder. Each site has a useful info page and also a good help file in .chm format. I suspect you will not bother to view these, and just get stuck in. So; I include the most important part of the guidance that surely you can read while you are downloading. It will save you time and frustration, cus if you don't follow these simple instructions you may find that your new version of the SwishSite may not work!

IMPORTANT:
Before testing any of your movies, you should export the main movie (File | Export | SWF) to the UPLOAD folder. This will ensure that the movies can communicate and you can properly test your changes. Failure to export the SWF to the UPLOAD folder before testing in the internal player could result in error messages. Note that these error messages occur because your movie is attempting to communicate with a movie that is not present; once you export your SWF and test it from the main movie it will work fine. Do not export the HTML as this page has been created for you and contains code which positions your movie and removes borders from the page so that you movie displays correctly.

Renaming the Recycle Bin??

To rename the Recycle Bin, acting on the regedit program (As it seems that one cannot rename it in the usual way...)

To manually rename the Recycle Bin (all Windows except XP):

* Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
* Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} (you can also select Find from the Edit menu, and search for "Recycle Bin.")
* Double-click (Default), and type the new name.
* Press OK and then close the Registry Editor.
* Click on the desktop, and press F5 to refresh the desktop so that this change will take effect.

To manually rename the Recycle Bin (Windows XP only):

* Right-click the Recycle Bin icon and select Properties.

CAN'T ACCESS SOME WEBSITES?

Does this happen to you? Every now and then when posting or previewing a post, or simply browsing; you get the page not available message or takes a long time to view? If you look at your firewall's log, you'll see that your ISP's and/or router IP is blocked (192.168.1.254 or .1).

1. Find the IP address of your gateway. If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, run IPCONFIG at a command prompt on the Host computer. If you're using Windows 98 or Me, run WINIPCFG on the Host computer. Either way, you'll get an address that looks like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where the x's represent numbers).
a.) Then, go to one of your Client machines, and type the following:
b.) PING -f -l 1500 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the gateway address you obtained in the first step). You'll probably get an error message indicating that it must be fragmented. If you do, type the following:

c.) PING -f -l 1492 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
If that doesn't work, try this:
d.) PING -f -l 1472 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

2. The numbers in each of these examples (1500, 1492, 1472) are the MTU values. Continue issuing this command with lower and lower MTU numbers until you get ping responses instead of an error message. The highest MTU value that works is the one you need to be using. If an MTU of 1500 (the first command, above) does not produce an error, then this solution won't work for you.

The next step is to configure all your Client computers to use the new, lower MTU as the default for all Internet communication.

Windows 2000 and XP:

1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) on one of your "Client" machines.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ Tcpip\ Parameters\ Interfaces

3. There should be several subkeys under the Interfaces key; most likely, you'll find three. View the contents of each key by clicking, and find the one that corresponds to your primary network adapter; it will be the one with more values than the other two, and will have an IP address value set to something like 192.168.0.x.

4. Once you've found the correct subkey, create a new DWORD value in it (Edit -> New -> DWORD Value), and name the value MTU.

5. Double-click the new value, choose the Decimal option, and type the MTU value determined above.

6. Click Ok when you're done - you'll need to restart Windows for this change take effect.

7. Repeat this for each Client machine.

Windows 98/Me:

1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE) on one of your "Client" machines.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ Class\ Net
3. Under that branch, find a key (numbered, such as 0005) that contains has TCP/IP assigned to the DriverDesc value.

4. Select New from the Edit menu, then String Value, and type MaxMTU for the name of the new value.

5. Double-click the new value, choose the Decimal option, and type the MTU value determined above.

6. Click Ok when you're done - you'll need to restart Windows for this change take effect.

7. Repeat this for each Client machine.

No matter how good your systems may be, they're only as effective as what you put into them.

The following registry settings will help to increase the resistance of the NT or Windows 2000 network stack to network denial of service attacks. All of the TCP/IP parameters are registry values located under the registry key:

NOTE: You can use the firewall approach only if your system doesn't communicate with legacy systems that rely on NetBIOS name resolution to locate machines and shared resources. HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT YOUR PC? (Guide)

The challenge with a problem is not so much the solution but figuring out what the actual problem is. For instance: if your internet connection is lost you might automatically assume it's a problem your ISP, yet the problem might actually be a cable connection problem, a corrupted software file, a conflict with another software program running at the same time, a virus or any number of other problems. By doing some basic troubleshooting you can effectively identify problems and get farther down the path to an actual solution. Also, if you need to call a manufacturers help-line, the call will be much more productive if you've done some troubleshooting before hand.

Before you do anything:

Check your mental state and don’t panic! My personal theory to computer problems is that there is a direct connection between the amount of stress a user is under and the number of times a computer will crash. Chances are that when you are in a rush to get a document out the door, you will forget to close open applications, or to save your work and you will send too many commands (like printing, spell-check, etc.) at once. If you're moving fast on the computer, it pays to take a moment, take a deep breath, close unnecessary programs and save your work. Also, if you're trying to solve a problem that your computer is having, you will need full mental capabilities. So if you're feeling frustrated and tired while trying to troubleshoot - take a break! You’ll find you’ll solve your problems much faster if you have a fresh mind and attitude. Don’t panic either. Sometimes computer problems can appear to be much more serious than they really are. Panicking can lead you to jump to a solution of a perceived problem before you’ve actually identified the real problem.

1. Some initial steps:

a.)Check the component's documentation and/or the manufacturer's website: The appendix of most manuals will contain a troubleshooting guide that will identify the most common problems the component may have. Most software installations include placing a readme file in the programs directory that will list all known incompatibilities. Manufacturer websites can be extremely helpful as well, with support pages that will direct you to common problems and solutions that may include a software "patch" that can be downloaded directly from the site and then run on your hard drive

b.)Check for Viruses: Any strange behavior on a computer could be due to a virus. Use an anti-viral program to scan your system - and follow the instructions on the use of the anti-viral program closely

c.)Use diagnostic utilities: Software crashes can often be caused by corrupted files or registry conflicts. Using a program like Window's Scan Disk (found under System Tools in the Accessories folder on your program menu) can identify and fix corrupted files. Norton Utilities has a program called "System Check" that both checks the integrity of your files and looks for software conflicts and will repair problems

2. If none of those steps work - it's time to use your brain!

a.)Ask yourself - when did the problem I’m experiencing first start? If you made any change, such as installing new software or adding hardware, to the computer and now you are having a problem, chances are the change is the cause. Also, while you're trying to identify problems and solutions remember to make only one change to your system at a time, so you can easily trace your steps.

b.)Determine if the problem is repeatable or if it is intermittent: A repeatable problem is one that occurs all the time, or always in response to a specific user action

For example, if the computer crashes everytime you print a document - that’s a repeatable problem, an intermittent problem will appear to happen spontaneously or randomly. An intermittent problem is usually the result of a specific set of circumstances happening occasionally. With these problems it is important to try to establish a pattern involved in the problem. Keep a problem log at the computer and try to write down all the circumstances occurring when the crash occurred, including the most minute detail.

c.)Use the process of elimination: Start to remove components from your system one at a time. After you remove a component test to see if the problem still exists. This is a great way to figure out if the problem is caused by a conflict between software programs and/or hardware. Start by removing the most recently installed stuff first

3. Some Final Tips:

a.)If you call the helpline - be patient and prepared: You will have to wait on hold awhile to get to get an actual person on the phone. Like death and taxes that's just a fact of life. If you can review all the troubleshooting steps you took to identify the problem, the technical assistance operator will be able to identify the solution more quickly and effectively

Remember: if you get a technical assistance operator on the line don't hang up until you're sure the problem has been solved

b.)If the equipment is new, send it back: Most equipment is under warranty and if there is anything severely wrong with it, you should send it back. This may not help your immediate goal, but it will save you plenty of time in the long run. If the equipment is under warranty, the vendor will deal with it.

The most important thing to remember while troubleshooting is to be patient and observant. By using these steps you should easily be able to resolve even the most inexplicable problems

HOW TO DELETE STUBBORN FILES?

First, a brief explanation on why this happens. This is usually because an active process has an open handle to the file which prevents it from being deleted. Normally if you close down all running programs you'll find that most files will then be free to delete, but that's not always the case, and in some cases it may even be a trojan that's preventing itself from being deleted.

BASIC REGISTRY RULE: Any changes made to the registry file are crucial to the running of Windows and if damaged or misconfigured, could cause severe problems.
Follow Microsfot's recommended instructions to "BackUP" all important data first. It's recommended to save the backup on a CD, DVD or seperate HD due to the size factor (large)

This option is not installed in Windows XP Home Edition. To install you will need the XP Home CDRom. Navigate to %CDROM%\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP\. Look for Ntbackup.msi and double-click it to execute the install wizard.

Unfortunately as this is not supported under Windows95/98 an application must use entries in WININIT.ini to achieve the same effect.
